Ranks, pay and essential requirements
Advertisement IITH/HR/Faculty Rectt (R)/1/2026-27 requires a PhD, first-class preceding degree and strong academic record.
| Assistant Professor Grade II | Under three years’ post-PhD experience; fresh-candidate minimum basic pay ₹98,200. |

| Assistant Professor Grade I | Three years’ post-PhD experience; minimum basic pay ₹1,01,500. |
| Associate Professor | Six years’ post-PhD experience, including three at Assistant Professor Level 12 or equivalent; minimum basic pay ₹1,39,600. |
| Professor | Ten years’ post-PhD experience, including four at Associate Professor Level 13A2 in specified institutions; alternative exceptional-achievement route available. Minimum basic pay ₹1,59,100. |
Pay excludes admissible allowances. Preferred ages: 35 for Assistant Professor, 45 for Associate Professor and 55 for Professor; relaxations apply.
Sixteen departments participate. Check department-specific degrees and specialisations. Mathematics is restricted to theoretical computer science; Biomedical Engineering excludes biomaterials, tissue engineering, regenerative medicine and nanomedicine this round.
Foreign nationals may apply, with appointments on contracts up to five years. Apply online only; separate applications are required for different departments. Read the complete notice for qualifying experience and exceptions.
