Faculty opportunities in nanoscience and engineering
CeNSE invites candidates with strong academic and research records and at least three years of post-PhD research experience.
Research scope and priority areas
CeNSE’s broad focus includes nanoelectronics and photonics, lab-on-chip/biomedical devices, photovoltaics and energy storage, and sensors, integration and packaging.
| Explicit recruitment priorities | Examples in the notice |
|---|---|
| Integration | Heterogeneous integration and 3D packaging |
| Healthcare devices | Multimodal sensing |
| Alternative computing | Neuromorphic devices |
| Photonics | On-chip sources/detectors, mid-IR, active and topological photonics |
| Quantum technologies | Computing and sensing platforms |
| Advanced CMOS | Memory and RF applications |
The emphasis is device development using CeNSE’s fabrication and characterisation facilities. OBC and SC/ST candidates are particularly encouraged.
Eligibility and rank
The Science and Engineering rolling advertisement linked from IISc’s current recruitment page concerns Assistant Professor positions. It requires a PhD, first class/equivalent in the preceding degree and a strong academic record. Three years’ teaching/research/professional experience excluding PhD work is normally required, with exceptional cases considered.
Read both levels of guidance: CeNSE specifically requests post-PhD research experience. Confirm how your record meets both the Centre’s expectations and the institute advertisement.
Application documents
The linked advertisement requests PDF uploads: CV/publication list, up to five selected papers, a research plan with laboratory-space and equipment costs, undergraduate/postgraduate teaching plan, applicable category/disability certificates and other relevant information.
Editorial advice: Use the research plan to distinguish your independent direction from your previous group’s work. Identify facilities you would use, additional resources you need and a realistic sequence of experiments or device-development milestones.
Seminar and selection process
CeNSE describes a seminar and one-to-two-day faculty interaction, followed by institute committee interview and final approval. Its guidance asks for a three-to-five-year research plan and a longer-term vision.
Preparation advice: Practise explaining the broader scientific principles behind your specialism. Connect your proposed work with teaching contributions and explain what the existing facilities enable you to do.
How to apply
- Open the CeNSE opportunities page linked below and locate “Faculty Positions”.
- Follow its IISc Faculty Recruitment Portal link; register or sign in.
- Read the institute’s current Science and Engineering advertisement and portal instructions.
- Select the appropriate centre and upload the requested materials.
- Check all entries and retain the submission confirmation.
IISc’s rolling advertisement permits up to three department/centre choices and one application under process per applicant.
Verification note: The portal login was accessible; account-only fields were not inspected. The institute’s older “How to apply” webpage still references 2019, so this guide uses the advertisement linked from the current Faculty Recruitment page instead.
For recruitment enquiries, the advertisement lists registrar@iisc.ac.in, with copies to recruitment.council@iisc.ac.in and ar.council@iisc.ac.in.
Independent application preparation
CareerAidHub’s Career Accelerator Program offers CV, research-plan and teaching-statement feedback, plus opportunity mapping. Follow institute rules on outside assistance and retain responsibility for your submission. Support does not guarantee interviews or appointment.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a fixed deadline?
The CeNSE faculty notice gives no closing date; IISc’s linked advertisement is rolling. Check the portal before submitting.
Are energy topics included?
Yes, photovoltaics and energy storage appear in CeNSE’s broader research scope. Match the proposal to the Centre’s device-development focus.
Are Associate Professor and Professor vacancies confirmed?
The CeNSE page uses the general term faculty. The linked Science and Engineering advertisement is for Assistant Professor; higher-rank openings were not established here.
Is age 35 a strict cutoff?
The linked advertisement says candidates should preferably be below 35. Ask IISc about your circumstances rather than interpreting a preference as an absolute bar.
Can foreign nationals apply?
The institute advertisement welcomes Indian and foreign applicants, with appointment arrangements depending on citizenship and OCI status.
Is emailing a CV sufficient?
No. CeNSE directs all faculty applications through the IISc recruitment portal.
Are salary totals on older PDFs current?
Allowance-dependent totals can change. Obtain current compensation details from IISc before relying on a take-home estimate.
Does meeting the minimum qualify me for an interview?
No. Selection depends on screening and institutional research needs.
