The School brings together researchers from Max Planck Institutes, universities and other German research organizations to study cognition from multiple perspectives, including biological and non-biological systems.

Program Structure

Year 1 — Orientation phase

The first year combines interdisciplinary coursework, Cognition Academies and extended lab rotations. Students normally rotate through multiple research groups before finalizing their doctoral direction.

Years 2–4 — Doctoral research

After successful completion of the orientation-year evaluation, candidates move into the doctoral research phase, develop a project with their supervisor and thesis advisory committee, and work toward completion of the doctorate by the end of year four.

The doctoral degree is awarded by the university with which the candidate’s supervisor is affiliated.

Applicants may enter with a bachelor’s or master’s degree in a field related to cognition. Relevant backgrounds include:

• Philosophy

Applicants from other subjects may also be considered where their academic background includes sufficient cognition-related coursework and their motivation is well justified.

Academic performance

The School notes that successful applicants often have a German-equivalent GPA around 1.3, although exceptional strength in research, references, publications or other areas can compensate for a lower converted grade.

English proficiency

The programme is conducted in English. Applicants who are not exempt must demonstrate approximately B2-level English. Current examples include IELTS 5.5 or TOEFL iBT 72, alongside several other accepted qualifications.

Funding and Financial Support

First year

During the orientation year, doctoral candidates receive a stipend of €1,565 net per month plus up to €100 per month toward health insurance where applicable.

Doctoral research phase

After successful completion of the orientation year, candidates move onto a public-service employment contract at the institution hosting their doctoral research. Official programme materials identify this as an E13-level public-service contract under the applicable German wage agreement.

The programme charges no tuition fees.

2027 Application Documents

The current application page requests:

• bachelor’s and/or master’s degree certificates or proof of current enrollment;
• passport or identity-card copy;
• academic CV, maximum two pages;
• personal statement, maximum one page;
• names of up to three potential doctoral supervisors from the School’s Fellows;
• contact information for at least two academic referees;
• English-language evidence where required; and
• academic records/transcripts as requested in the portal.

Referees receive an electronic questionnaire from the School and must submit it by the application deadline.

Selection Process

Admission is highly competitive, with up to 25 doctoral candidates accepted per academic year.

The 2027 selection process runs from September through the end of March. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to virtual interviews on 23–24 February 2027, with final decisions normally reached by the end of March.

2. Prepare the two-page CV and one-page personal statement.
3. Identify up to three potential supervisors from the School’s faculty network.
4. Ask at least two suitable academic referees for permission to nominate them.
5. Prepare degree/enrollment documents and English-language proof where required.
6. Submit the complete application through the official online portal by 1 December 2026.
7. Ensure all referee forms are also submitted before the deadline.
