IMPRS-TRUST PhD at a Glance

IMPRS-TRUST is a research-oriented graduate programme jointly operated by the Max Planck Institute for Informatics, the Max Planck Institute for Software Systems, the Computer Science Department at Saarland University and the Computer Science Department at RPTU Kaiserslautern-Landau.

Program Structure

The graduate programme combines advanced research training with doctoral research under close supervision from faculty across the participating Max Planck institutes and universities.

Preparatory phase

Students complete advanced coursework and research preparation appropriate to their background. The programme includes a qualifying process that must be completed within the prescribed preparatory period.

Dissertation phase

After successful progression, students focus on original doctoral research with their supervisor and research group. The doctorate itself is awarded through one of the cooperating universities rather than by the Max Planck institute directly.

Start dates are flexible by mutual agreement, although many new doctoral researchers begin around August or September.

Eligibility

IMPRS-TRUST welcomes applicants with a bachelor’s or master’s degree in Computer Science or a closely related field from a strong academic institution.

Successful candidates are expected to demonstrate:

• an outstanding academic record, normally near the top of their class;
• strong preparation in computer science or an equivalent technical discipline;
• clear research potential;
• proficiency in spoken and written English; and
• strong academic recommendations.

Research Scope

IMPRS-TRUST focuses on trustworthy computing across foundational and systems-oriented computer science. Research opportunities depend on the current faculty and research groups across the participating institutions.

Relevant themes can include security, privacy, reliable and distributed systems, programming languages, formal reasoning, algorithms, machine learning, and other areas where computing systems must be dependable, verifiable or robust.

Applicants should review the current research groups and faculty pages before applying rather than assuming that every topic is available in every review round.

Funding

Official IMPRS-TRUST and MPI-SWS graduate-study pages state that admitted students receive full financial support.

The programme describes this support as sufficient to cover living expenses and tuition costs associated with doctoral study.

Application Review and Selection

Applications are accepted continuously but are considered against the programme’s twice-yearly review cutoffs.

Applications remain active in the system for approximately four months. After an initial review, selected applicants may be contacted for additional material, reference requests or interviews.

The MPI-SWS graduate-study process states that references are requested after the first-round review rather than automatically at the moment the application is first submitted.

A year-round portal is useful only if the application is ready before a decision cutoff. If your profile will materially improve with a thesis result, publication or stronger reference before December 31, plan the submission accordingly.

Demonstrate research fit without overcommitting to one adviser

Show that you understand the participating research environment and can articulate where your interests connect, but do not assume prior faculty contact is required unless a specific research group asks for it.
