IDEAL PhD Fellowship at IMDEA Nanociencia

IDEAL PhD — the IMDEA Nanociencia Doctoral Training Programme in Nanoscience — was co-funded through the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions COFUND framework. The programme was designed to recruit 12 doctoral researchers across two open calls and provide interdisciplinary, intersectoral doctoral training at IMDEA Nanociencia in Madrid.

Research Themes

Applicants to the IDEAL PhD programme selected a project within one of six research programmes at IMDEA Nanociencia:

• Nanotechnology for energy harvesting;
• Quantum materials at the nanoscale;
• Nanotechnology for healthcare;
• Nanomagnetism for Information and Communication Technologies;
• Ultrafast phenomena at the nanoscale; and
• Nanotechnology for critical raw materials and sustainability.

The programme combined doctoral research with interdisciplinary training, secondment opportunities and professional-development activities.

Eligibility in Call 2

• Applicants had to satisfy the MSCA mobility rule: they must not have resided or carried out their main activity in Spain for more than 12 months in the three years before the deadline.
• Candidates needed an official university qualification giving access to doctoral studies.
• Applicants had to be doctoral candidates and therefore could not already hold a doctoral degree at the call deadline.
• English proficiency at approximately B2 level or higher was required.
• The call was open to applicants of any nationality.

How the IDEAL PhD Application Worked

Applicants registered through the dedicated IDEAL PhD programme portal, selected one advertised research project and associated supervisor, and submitted the documents required by the Guide for Applicants.

The programme followed Open, Transparent and Merit-based Recruitment principles and applied equal-opportunity requirements consistent with the European Charter and Code for Researchers.

Current PhD Opportunities at IMDEA Nanociencia

Although IDEAL PhD is not currently open, IMDEA Nanociencia continues to recruit doctoral researchers through project-specific vacancies. Current examples on the institute’s Careers page include positions in areas such as supramolecular robotics and ultrafast nonlinear spectroscopy of photocatalytic interfaces.

These roles are separate from IDEAL PhD and can have different funding, duration, eligibility and application requirements.
