Route 1 — Apply to a currently advertised PhD position

1. Review the live EPFL PhD Student vacancies and select positions aligned with your research background.
2. Read the individual job description carefully, including the required doctoral programme.
3. Prepare the documents requested by that vacancy.
4. Submit the job application through the EPFL careers platform where the advertisement requires online submission.
5. If shortlisted or instructed by the vacancy, complete the separate application to the appropriate EPFL doctoral programme.

Route 2 — Apply first to an EPFL doctoral programme

Some programmes allow or expect candidates to apply to the programme first. If the programme considers you admissible, you then need to secure a thesis director and funded PhD position before final matriculation.

Central doctoral-program application file

EPFL’s general doctoral application requires personal and academic information, the chosen doctoral programme and contact details for three referees. Uploaded documents include:

• scans of diplomas and grades from higher-education institutions;
• a statement of objectives;
• a passport or official identity document; and
• three confidential recommendations submitted through EPFL’s electronic system.
