IAS CEU Global Invisible University Fellowships 2027/28

IAS CEU offers residential fellowships to accomplished senior scholars and promising early-career researchers who want to spend dedicated time pursuing independent research in an interdisciplinary intellectual community.

The 2027/28 programme is organised within CEU’s Global Invisible University initiative, which connects research, teaching, mentoring and civic engagement while responding to pressures affecting universities, scholarship and academic freedom.

Eligibility for Junior and Senior Fellowships

Applicants should normally:

  • hold a PhD or equivalent in the social sciences or humanities;
  • have a strong record of scholarly publications;
  • propose an excellent research project aligned with the intellectual priorities of the programme;
  • be able to work and communicate effectively in English; and
  • meet the programme’s rules concerning recent CEU affiliation and previous IAS CEU fellowships.

Under the current call, applicants whose PhD was awarded in 2018 or later apply in the Junior category, while applicants with an earlier PhD apply in the Senior category.

IAS CEU’s core fellowship model combines a stipend with accommodation and access to CEU research infrastructure, libraries and the interdisciplinary IAS community.

Fellowship Terms

Residential fellowships may cover:

  • the full academic year, October–June;
  • a short fall term, October–December;
  • an extended fall term, October–February; or
  • a spring term, January–June.

Fellows are expected to pursue their research actively, participate in IAS CEU seminars and intellectual life, and contribute to the broader goals of the Global Invisible University.

  3. Prepare the research project, letter of intent, CV, publication information and other required components.
  4. Combine the requested documents into the application package in the prescribed format.

  6. Submit before 1 October 2026 at 11:59 p.m. CET for the Junior/Senior scholar routes.
