NTNU Humanities PhD Research Fellow Positions 2026/27: At a Glance

Eligible Scientific PhD Programmes

The open call covered four scientific doctoral programmes within the Faculty of Humanities:

• Humanities and the Arts;
• Historical and Cultural Studies;
• Language and Linguistics; and
• Interdisciplinary Studies of Culture.

Academic Eligibility

The call required qualifications equivalent to NTNU’s doctoral-admission standard. In practical terms, applicants were expected to have a relevant Master’s-level academic background equivalent to a five-year Norwegian higher-education pathway, normally including 120 ECTS at Master’s level and substantial independent research work.

Applicants were also expected to have a strong academic record, normally equivalent to an average grade of B or better under NTNU’s grading scale. Candidates with a weaker formal grade profile could be considered where they documented particular suitability for doctoral study.

International applicants had to provide the required documentation for foreign higher education and follow NTNU’s rules for documenting the scope and quality of prior degrees.

Salary, Employment and Research Funding

This was an employment-based doctorate rather than a conventional scholarship. Successful candidates would receive conditional admission to the relevant doctoral programme and were required to satisfy the remaining admission conditions within three months of starting employment.

Research-Group and Supervisor Fit Was Essential

The positions were linked to specific Faculty of Humanities research groups. Applicants therefore had to identify an appropriate research environment and contact the relevant group well before the deadline.

The intended main supervisor had to:

• be employed at one of the Faculty of Humanities departments;
• belong to the research group with which the applicant sought affiliation; and
• meet NTNU’s requirements for doctoral supervision.

The archived call required written confirmation from the intended main supervisor as part of the application. The project description was also described as the most important element in the evaluation.

Archived 2026/27 Application Requirements

The application package included:

• CV;
• academic diplomas and transcripts;
• doctoral project description;
• written confirmation from the intended main supervisor;
• contact information for two relevant referees; and
• additional documentation for foreign education where required.

The project had to demonstrate strong scientific potential and be realistic within the standard three-year doctoral period. NTNU also expected applicants to show that they would have access to the infrastructure and resources necessary to complete the proposed work.
