Yale Young Global Scholars 2027 at a Glance

Yale Young Global Scholars is an intensive two-week academic programme held on Yale University’s campus in New Haven, Connecticut. It brings together secondary-school students from the United States and around the world for interdisciplinary seminars, lectures, collaborative learning and residential campus life.

YYGS 2027 Application Deadlines

Application fee

• Early Action: $85.
• Regular Decision: $100.
• Need-based fee waiver: applicants who qualify for and request the YYGS application fee waiver can reduce the application fee to $0.

Who Can Apply for YYGS Summer 2027?

Applicants must satisfy all of the 2027 eligibility requirements.

• Age: be at least 16 years old by the first day of Session III — 18 July 2027.
• Age ceiling: ordinarily be no older than 18 during the programme’s final session window.
• School level: be a current high-school sophomore or junior, or the international equivalent.
• Northern Hemisphere graduation: expected to graduate in May/June 2028 or 2029.
• Southern Hemisphere graduation: expected to graduate in November/December 2027 or 2028.
• First-time participation: applicants must not have previously participated in YYGS.
• Nationality: students from all countries are eligible to apply.
• English readiness: applicants must be able to participate fully in an intensive English-language academic programme.

Each track is interdisciplinary. YYGS students take part in lectures, small seminars, collaborative exercises and other academic programming rather than following a conventional single-subject high-school course.

YYGS 2027 Tuition and What It Covers

The published tuition for one Summer 2027 residential session is $7,500.

Tuition covers core programme costs including:

• housing in Yale residential colleges;
• meals during the programme;
• curriculum and academic materials; and
• most on-campus residential and programme activities.

What tuition normally does not cover

Transportation to and from New Haven is generally not included in standard tuition or ordinary need-based tuition aid. Families should therefore plan separately for airfare, ground transportation and related travel expenses unless the student receives a named scholarship that explicitly includes travel support.

YYGS Need-Based Financial Aid

YYGS offers need-based financial aid to both domestic and international applicants. Awards can cover from part of the tuition up to 100% of the $7,500 tuition, depending on demonstrated financial need.

Applicants request aid within the YYGS application. Financial circumstances are reviewed separately from the academic application, and YYGS may request additional financial information when necessary.

Application fee waiver

Students who cannot afford the application fee may request a need-based fee waiver within the application. If approved, the fee is reduced to $0.

Named YYGS Scholarships for Summer 2027

YYGS also lists named scholarships for specific student populations. These are separate from ordinary need-based financial-aid awards and have their own eligibility conditions.

YYGS 2027 Application Components

The current YYGS application requires academic, personal and school information rather than a traditional university-style package.

• Activities list describing meaningful extracurricular, community, academic or personal involvement.
• One 400-word essay.
• One 200-word response.
• Two “fast take” responses with a maximum of 280 characters each.
• Official school transcript.
• One recommender who completes the official YYGS online Recommendation Form.
• Optional English-language test scores, such as TOEFL or Duolingo English Test, where the applicant believes they strengthen the application.
• Optional need-based financial-aid request and supporting financial information.

How to choose the recommender

The recommender should be an adult who knows the applicant well in an academic or educational context and can provide specific evidence about the student’s curiosity, classroom engagement, character and readiness for a collaborative academic environment.

Use the essays to show how you think

YYGS already receives grades and activities elsewhere in the application. The written responses are more useful when they reveal intellectual curiosity, reflection and the applicant’s way of approaching unfamiliar questions.

Do not overstate “fully funded”

If you require travel support, check the named-scholarship rules directly. A 100% tuition award does not automatically mean airfare and ground transportation are covered.

Give the recommender enough time

Because YYGS uses its own recommendation form, make sure the recommender receives the portal request early enough to complete it before the selected application deadline.

Choose the application round strategically

Early Action provides an earlier admissions and financial-aid decision. Regular Decision gives applicants more preparation time and is also the deadline used for named-scholarship consideration.
