UBC PhD, Postdoc, Faculty & Scientist Opportunities 2026

University of British Columbia campus representing PhD, postdoctoral, faculty, scientist, and academic research career opportunities.

Updated 13 September 2026: The University of British Columbia (UBC) recruits PhD students, postdoctoral fellows, faculty members, research associates and scientists through different systems. There is no single UBC application portal for every academic opportunity. PhD applicants apply to a graduate programme, while many postdoctoral, faculty and research positions are recruited through UBC faculties, departments, laboratories and Workday.

This guide brings the routes together in one place, explains the 2026 funding changes, lists selected current postdoctoral vacancies, clarifies eligibility and application documents, and shows international applicants where to look next.

Important: JR25308 and JR22977 Are No Longer Current

Search users may still encounter UBC requisition numbers JR25308 and JR22977. Both were genuine UBC postdoctoral advertisements, but their listed closing dates were in August 2026 and have passed. JR25308 was a Postdoctoral Fellow position in the Levings Research Lab with an expected annual pay of CAD 70,000. JR22977 was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow role connected with personalized cancer radiotherapy. Applicants searching these requisitions should use UBC’s live career pages to find replacement or related openings.

UBC Postdoctoral Eligibility in 2026

UBC’s Postdoctoral Fellows Policy (AP10), effective April 2026, defines the university-wide eligibility framework. A postdoctoral fellow must generally commence the appointment within five years of being awarded a PhD or within ten years of being awarded an MD, DDS, DMD or PharmD. The period may be extended when a research career has been interrupted by circumstances such as parental leave.

UBC postdoctoral fellows work under the supervision of one or more faculty members. Appointments are typically made in successive one-year periods for up to three years. With Dean approval, a person may hold UBC postdoctoral appointments for up to five years.

UBC Postdoctoral Stipend and Benefits

From Fall 2026, UBC established a minimum annual stipend of CAD 55,000 for postdoctoral fellows holding employee or award-recipient appointments. Individual positions can pay more depending on discipline, grant funding and responsibilities; current advertisements show examples ranging from CAD 55,000 to CAD 90,000 per year.

Benefit eligibility depends on appointment type, duration, percentage appointment, salary and other conditions. Eligible postdoctoral fellows may have access to health, dental and other employment-related benefits according to UBC HR rules. Applicants should read the offer letter and UBC benefits information carefully rather than assuming every fellowship has the same package.

How to Find and Apply for a UBC Postdoc

  1. Identify a research group. UBC advises prospective postdocs to search faculty research interests and identify potential supervisors.
  2. Check live postings. Use the UBC Postdoctoral Fellows Office career page, UBC Workday and faculty/department pages.
  3. Read AP10 eligibility. Confirm that your degree timing and appointment history fit UBC policy.
  4. Tailor the application. Match your methods, publications and research direction to the advertised project.
  5. Follow the specific posting. There is no one central postdoctoral application process for every UBC fellowship.

UBC PhD Admissions in 2026

PhD admission is separate from employment recruitment. Applicants select a specific UBC doctoral programme and follow that programme’s academic requirements, deadlines, English-language requirements and supervisor-contact rules.

From September 2026, full-time students enrolled in a UBC Vancouver PhD programme are entitled to a minimum funding package of CAD 40,000 per year for each of the first four years. This applies to both domestic and international PhD students. The package can include awards, teaching-related work, research assistantships and graduate academic assistantships.

Funding and programme requirements can differ, so applicants should confirm the package shown by the exact programme. UBC’s PhD Applicants Hub also notes that most international PhD students may receive additional assistance through the International Tuition Award, subject to eligibility.

Typical UBC PhD Application Documents

  • Online graduate application for the selected programme
  • Academic transcripts and degree records
  • Statement of interest or statement of purpose
  • Research proposal or writing sample where required
  • Academic CV
  • References, with the exact number set by the programme
  • English-language test evidence where required
  • Supervisor information if the programme requires or encourages prior contact
  • Additional programme-specific material such as portfolio, GRE/GMAT or sample work where applicable

UBC Faculty Positions

Faculty positions can include Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, Professor, Professor of Teaching, Lecturer, clinical academic and other faculty appointments. Each vacancy has its own requirements, so applicants should not use one generic faculty package for all roles.

A research-intensive faculty application may request a cover letter, academic CV, research statement, teaching statement, selected publications, equity/diversity statement and referee information. Teaching-focused or clinical positions can require a different balance of documents. Always follow the official advertisement.

UBC Research Associate and Scientist Roles

Research associate and scientist roles are employment positions rather than PhD admissions or standard postdoctoral appointments. They often emphasize specialized expertise, independent project delivery, laboratory or instrument experience, data analysis, translational research, regulatory requirements or team leadership.

Applicants should make technical competence easy to verify. A strong application links each major method or responsibility in the advertisement to evidence from previous research, publications, projects or infrastructure experience.

Advice for International and Indian Applicants

  • Check the exact route: PhD admission, postdoctoral appointment and faculty employment use different processes.
  • Verify credential requirements: Graduate programmes evaluate international credentials according to programme and country-specific rules.
  • Do not assume funding: Use the programme offer or job posting to understand salary, stipend and benefits.
  • Plan immigration after the offer: Academic selection does not replace Canadian study/work authorization requirements.
  • Tailor research fit: Generic statements are weaker than evidence linking your methods and publications to the UBC group.
  • Submit early: Workday postings close at the stated local deadline and may not accept late submissions.

Common Mistakes

  • Using an expired UBC requisition because it still appears in Google.
  • Applying to the faculty-jobs system for a PhD programme.
  • Assuming all postdocs have the same salary or benefits.
  • Ignoring UBC’s five-year PhD timing rule for postdoctoral appointments.
  • Sending the same research statement to unrelated laboratories.
  • Missing programme-specific PhD deadlines.
  • Failing to save the requisition number and a copy of the advertisement.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much funding do UBC PhD students receive in 2026?

At UBC Vancouver, full-time PhD students receive a minimum funding package of CAD 40,000 per year for each of the first four years from September 2026. The policy applies to domestic and international PhD students.

What is the minimum UBC postdoc stipend in 2026?

Am I eligible for a UBC postdoc more than five years after my PhD?

UBC Policy AP10 generally requires a postdoctoral appointment to start within five years of the PhD award, but the period can be extended for qualifying research-career interruptions. Check the current policy and discuss your circumstances with the recruiting unit.

Is there one UBC postdoctoral application portal?

No. UBC postdoctoral recruitment is managed by individual faculties, departments and supervisors. Openings may appear in Workday, the Postdoctoral Fellows Office listings, departmental pages or direct faculty recruitment.

Can international applicants apply for UBC academic positions?

Many UBC PhD, postdoctoral and academic positions accept international applicants. The exact vacancy controls eligibility, and successful applicants must meet Canadian immigration or work-authorization requirements.

Bottom line: UBC offers several distinct routes into research and academic careers. Choose the correct route first, use the live official posting or programme page, and prepare an application specifically for that opportunity rather than relying on expired requisitions or a generic university-wide checklist.
