Eligibility for the 2027 Cohort

Knight-Hennessy Scholars accepts applicants from around the world. There is no restriction based on citizenship, age, undergraduate institution, field of study or intended career.

Applicants must satisfy both KHS requirements and the admission requirements of their selected Stanford graduate programme.

Bachelor’s-degree timing rule

• For the 2027 cohort, applicants normally must have earned their first/bachelor’s degree in January 2020 or later.
• Applicants with qualifying military service may use the extended window and may qualify with a first degree earned in January 2018 or later.
• Current students may apply if they will complete their first degree before enrolling at Stanford, generally by September 2027.

The military extension is not limited to U.S. military applicants; qualifying military service is the relevant condition.

Stanford graduate programme requirement

Applicants must apply to and be admitted to an eligible full-time Stanford graduate degree programme. KHS supports scholars across Stanford’s graduate schools and disciplines, subject to each programme’s own admission rules.

What Knight-Hennessy Scholars Funds

Knight-Hennessy Scholars provides funding for the standard cost of attendance for up to three years of graduate study at Stanford.

The funding package generally includes:

• tuition and associated fees;
• a stipend for living and academic expenses;
• an annual travel stipend intended to cover an economy-class trip to and from Stanford;
• a one-time relocation stipend for newly enrolling Scholars; and
• the possibility of additional academic-enrichment funding for eligible second- and third-year Scholars.

Programmes longer than three years

KHS funding normally covers up to three years. For graduate programmes extending beyond three years, including many PhD and MD programmes, subsequent funding follows the standard arrangements of the relevant Stanford school or graduate programme.

Official Knight-Hennessy Selection Criteria

KHS evaluates candidates holistically around three core characteristics:

KHS does not publish a single qualifying score or one preferred profile. Academic achievement, experiences, recommendations, written responses and later selection stages are considered together.

KHS 2027 Application Materials

Applicants complete the KHS application separately from their Stanford graduate programme application.

The KHS application includes:

• the online Knight-Hennessy Scholars application;
• a one-page resume;
• undergraduate and graduate transcripts, as applicable;
• test scores where required by the selected Stanford graduate programme;
• two Knight-Hennessy recommendation letters;
• short-answer responses; and
• the required KHS essay.

2027 essay

The 2027 application asks applicants to reflect on how the people, experiences and circumstances that have influenced them have shaped who they are. The current essay limit is 550 words.

Short-answer responses

The application also includes three short-answer components designed to reveal interests, personal perspective and the applicant’s way of thinking beyond conventional academic credentials.

Recommendations

Two KHS recommendation letters are required. Strong recommenders should be able to address the applicant’s character, independence of thought, leadership and contribution to others rather than simply restate grades or job titles.

KHS Policy on AI Use

Permitted uses may include:

• brainstorming around the applicant’s own ideas;
• organising material the applicant has already developed;
• checking clarity;
• spelling and grammar support; and
• minor editing that does not alter authorship or meaning.

KHS does not permit AI to:

• generate substantive application responses;
• write draft essays for the applicant;
• create the applicant’s narrative framework;
• substantially rewrite personal responses; or
• generate personal reflections, conclusions or experiences.

Applicants using editing tools should therefore make sure their final application still reflects their own language, reasoning and lived experience.

How to Apply for Knight-Hennessy Scholars 2027

1. Select an eligible Stanford graduate programme. Confirm its admission requirements, testing requirements and deadline.
2. Check the Stanford programme’s KHS timing. Submit the Stanford application by the earlier of its KHS-specific deadline or 1 December 2026. Stanford MBA applicants must apply in Round 1.
3. Prepare the separate KHS application. Complete the resume, transcripts, recommendations, short answers and essay.
4. Choose two KHS recommenders. Select people who can speak directly to the three KHS selection criteria.
5. Follow the AI-use policy. Keep substantive writing, reflection and narrative development authentically your own.
6. Submit KHS by 6 October 2026 at 1:00 PM PT. Do not assume the Stanford graduate deadline is the same as the KHS deadline.
7. Complete the Stanford graduate application separately. Both application processes are required for final eligibility.

How to Strengthen a KHS Application

A strong KHS application should reveal how the applicant thinks, leads and contributes rather than simply summarise academic achievements already visible elsewhere in the file.

The essay and short responses should use specific experiences and decisions to demonstrate growth, judgement and values. Applicants should avoid generic leadership language or attempting to present a perfectly polished persona disconnected from their actual experiences.

Recommenders can strengthen the application by providing concrete examples of intellectual independence, purposeful action, collaboration and service.

Video Statement and Finalist Process

KHS uses additional selection stages after the initial application review.

Video statement

Around 500 applicants are typically invited on a rolling basis in January to submit a video statement. For the current cycle, invited applicants are asked to teach something to the future KHS cohort in a video of no more than two minutes.

Finalists

Up to approximately 180 finalists are selected for the required Finalist Experience.
