What Is the Max Planck Graduate Center for Quantum Materials?

MPGC-QM is a structured doctoral research programme bringing together researchers working on quantum materials across Max Planck Institutes in Germany.

Research Areas

MPGC-QM focuses on quantum materials and related areas spanning experimental, theoretical and computational research. Relevant directions can include condensed-matter physics, strongly correlated systems, superconductivity, topological materials, spintronics, materials synthesis, quantum optics, nanoscience, ultrafast phenomena and computational approaches.

Applicants should not assume that every research group participates in every recruitment round. Only Principal Investigators with an available position for the current call appear as selectable options in the application system.

Who Can Apply?

The current official Max Planck vacancy states that applicants should normally hold an MSc or equivalent degree and have a strong academic background in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics or Computer Science. Applicants should also have relevant knowledge of solid-state science, strong English-language ability and a clear interest in doctoral research in an international, multidisciplinary environment.

Fast-Track Route

Outstanding applicants with a first-class four-year Bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification may also be eligible for the programme’s fast-track option.

Applicants Still Completing Their Degree

Candidates may apply before completing their current degree provided they will complete the qualification before joining the programme. Where the final degree is not yet available, applicants should provide meaningful current academic records such as preliminary transcripts.

Already Enrolled PhD Students

The programme states that applicants who are already PhD students or already hold a PhD are not eligible for this programme.

International Applicant Eligibility

Candidates from any country may apply. Applicants should therefore focus primarily on academic eligibility, research fit and the application requirements rather than nationality.

Funding and Financial Support

The current Max Planck Society vacancy explicitly describes these opportunities as fully funded PhD positions. MPGC-QM also states that successful applicants receive a competitive monthly income intended to cover living costs. The programme does not charge an application fee.

Applicants invited to selection activities may also receive reimbursement for eligible travel expenses, including visa expenses where applicable. Exact employment, contractual and administrative arrangements should be confirmed in the offer provided to successful candidates.

Joint PhD Opportunities with Oxford University

MPGC-QM also offers a limited number of joint doctoral projects with the University of Oxford. Under these arrangements, students can divide their research time between Oxford and a participating Max Planck Institute and obtain their doctoral degree from the University of Oxford.

English test results should normally be no more than three years old at the final admission deadline. Exemptions can apply under conditions specified by MPGC-QM.

Do You Need to Contact a Supervisor Before Applying?

No. The programme specifically states that applicants do not need to contact a potential Principal Investigator before submitting an application. However, research fit still matters, so applicants should review the participating researchers and available research directions carefully before selecting preferences.

Reference Letters

GRE Requirement

The GRE General Test is highly recommended, but the current official application guidance does not state that it is mandatory. Applicants who have a suitable GRE result may include it according to the programme’s instructions.

Selection Process

MPGC-QM states that admission is highly competitive. The programme expects to admit approximately 20 students for the 2027–2028 academic year.

The current FAQ indicates that initial decisions are expected around mid- to late January 2027, followed by online interviews for shortlisted applicants in approximately February–March 2027. A further on-site or virtual visit may be organised for selected candidates before the final decision.
