Einstein Foundation Berlin 2026: PhD & Postdoc Funding

Einstein Foundation Berlin · Germany · Research Funding 2026

Einstein Foundation Berlin supports institutional research grants, postdoctoral career development and research collaborations. Its next general deadline is 16 November 2026, but the published host-university internal deadline of 5 October has passed. Researchers must secure an eligible Berlin institution’s support; the Foundation does not offer a universal individual PhD stipend through its Postdoctoral Grant.

November round: do not assume the 16 November 2026 grant deadline means individuals can apply after the university’s 5 October internal cutoff. The Independent Researcher variant also has stricter career-age and publication conditions for this round.

Current 2026 Funding Status

The Einstein Foundation Berlin lists 16 November 2026 as the next standard institutional application deadline for many programmes. However, its published host-university internal deadline was 5 October 2026, already past at the time of this review. This does not establish a public, self-service application opening for individual doctoral students or postdocs. Candidates must ask an eligible institution whether a proposal can still be advanced for the November round.

Deadline-sensitive rule: for the Einstein Independent Researcher variant at 16 November 2026, the Foundation imposes a maximum of 10 years after PhD and a qualifying first- or last-author category-A journal publication (or documented disciplinary equivalent). This special restriction differs from the general 12-year upper limit.

Which Institutions Can Submit?

For the Einstein Postdoctoral Grant, formal applicants are Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Technische Universität Berlin, Universität der Künste Berlin and Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin. Collaborations with non-university research institutes and/or the Hebrew University of Jerusalem can be possible. Candidate nationality may be German or international; eligibility depends on career stage and project fit.

The institution, rather than an unaffiliated individual, submits the formal grant proposal and acts as employer for funded researchers. An interested candidate should first establish support from an eligible Berlin host and its grants office.

Einstein Postdoctoral Grant: Three Variants

Starting Researcher (R2)Early postdoc within four years after PhD; ordinarily funded for up to four years, potentially six for strategically important research groups
Independent Researcher (R3)Established postdoc normally four to twelve years after PhD; up to four years’ support. Special November 2026 rule lowers maximum to ten years and imposes qualifying publication evidence
Professorship TrackResearchers generally between four and ten years after PhD seeking a professorial career; support up to five years
Funding mechanismPersonnel costs through host institution, plus eligible project expenses and, for relevant variants, staff, materials and smaller investments
Salary or flat stipendNo fixed universal fellowship salary supplied by the Foundation’s programme description

What This Means for PhD Applicants

The Foundation does not advertise a single general-purpose, individual PhD scholarship matching the postdoctoral grant. Doctoral researchers may benefit from positions created within Einstein-funded research groups, collaborations or research units. Those positions must be advertised, recruited and contracted by the relevant employing university or research institution.

Prospective PhD students should therefore search the careers boards of Berlin universities and research centres, check doctorate eligibility and supervisor availability, and distinguish employment applications from institutional research-grant submissions.

Other Funding Formats and Scope

The Foundation’s wider portfolio includes Einstein Visiting Fellow, Einstein Circle, Einstein Research Unit, Einstein Professorship and Einstein Guest Researcher (academic freedom). These support different objectives such as international collaboration, network-building, substantial research partnerships and senior academic appointments; they are not interchangeable with the postdoctoral grant.

Academic-freedom Immediate Support can be requested at any time via the Foundation’s team. Advanced Support follows regular deadline procedures, with an institutional application cap. The Foundation says it cannot currently accept applications for the Einstein BUA/Oxford Visiting Fellows and Einstein Strategic Professorships programmes.

Internal dates can determine institutional eligibility to lodge a proposal. After 5 October 2026, candidates should not assume their Berlin host will consider a new submission for 16 November merely because the Foundation deadline is in the future.

Application Documents and Research Plan

The official postdoctoral grant asks the eligible institution to compile a candidate CV with narrative elements, scientific reputation and research record, a substantial research proposal explaining background, research question, methods and expected results, a publication/outreach strategy, an explanation of career-development benefits, a detailed work plan and annual budget, and a compliant letter of support.

Additional elements may cover teaching, Berlin partnerships, stakeholder engagement and international networking. The precise application form, budget spreadsheet and supporting documents differ by scheme; use the latest linked official templates rather than relying on an outdated universal checklist.

How to Pursue Einstein Funding

  1. Identify the correct programme and career-stage variant; distinguish a PhD job application from a postdoctoral institutional grant.
  2. Contact an eligible Berlin research group and its research service to confirm sponsorship and internal readiness.
  3. Verify the candidate’s PhD date, publication record and any deadline-specific special restrictions.
  4. Agree on a distinctive research problem, Berlin-specific added value, methods and deliverables.
  5. Develop an institution-approved budget, personnel plan, career goals and host commitment.
  6. Ensure the institution submits to the Foundation through the correct procedure before its applicable deadline.

Important: contacting a professor does not mean an institutional nomination or funding approval has been obtained.

Proposal Quality and Selection Strategy

  • Demonstrate demonstrable research independence appropriate to R2 or R3 career level.
  • Explain the specific scientific infrastructure and networks that make Berlin an appropriate location.
  • Frame a question with convincing novelty, feasibility, outcomes and dissemination plans.
  • Use a restrained, itemised budget appropriate for salary, project costs and any team requested.
  • Make institutional support, faculty endorsement and the candidate’s career trajectory explicit.
  • Check whether the special 2026 Independent Researcher first/last-author condition applies to the submission.

The Foundation’s July 2026 award announcement included five researchers supported under its postdoctoral programme. Those awards evidence active programme funding, but are not themselves individual vacancies.

What Applicants Should Monitor Next

Monitor the Foundation’s applications deadlines and Postdoctoral Grant programme page for subsequent cycles and any changed criteria. For doctoral and postdoctoral job vacancies, also monitor institutional recruitment at Berlin universities and Charité. Treat 2026 university submission dates as cycle-specific, and do not infer an advertised 2027 call or a fixed personal stipend without a primary source.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Einstein Foundation offering an individual PhD scholarship?

Not as a universal direct-access programme under the Einstein Postdoctoral Grant. PhD researchers may be recruited to institutionally funded groups through university employment processes.

Is 16 November 2026 still the Foundation deadline?

Yes, for many standard institutional grant programmes, but the corresponding published internal university deadline was 5 October 2026.

Can an international postdoc apply?

Yes, an eligible Berlin host institution can seek support for an international candidate meeting variant-specific requirements.

Can I submit directly without a Berlin host?

Generally no. Applications for the Einstein Postdoctoral Grant must be lodged by one of the eligible Berlin institutions.

What is the Starting Researcher limit?

Ordinarily no more than four years after completion of the PhD.

What are the Independent Researcher limits?

Normally four to twelve years after PhD, but for the 16 November 2026 round the maximum is ten years with the special publication requirement.

Is there a guaranteed salary?

How long is postdoctoral funding?

Up to four years for the standard Starting/Independent variants; special arrangements can allow six years for Starting Researcher and up to five years for Professorship Track.

Is the Academic Freedom programme open year-round?

Immediate Support enquiries may be made at any time; Advanced Support follows standard deadlines.

Are BUA/Oxford visiting fellows accepting applications?

The Foundation currently states that applications for the BUA/Oxford Visiting Fellows programme cannot be accepted.
