What Is DECRA?

Discovery Early Career Researcher Award is the official scheme name. DECRA supports early-career research in Australia through the ARC Discovery Program.

The scheme supports research capability, emerging leadership, collaboration and projects addressing a significant knowledge gap with benefits for Australia. It can support researchers in teaching-and-research or research-only positions.

Funding and Duration

DurationThree years
Researcher supportSalary contribution and on-costs
Project costsUp to AUD 50,000 per year
Possible project expensesEligible personnel, equipment, consumables, facilities, fieldwork, software and dissemination
TravelThe scheme overview states a project-essential travel cap of AUD 50,000 over the activity period
Salary interpretationAn ARC salary contribution is not automatically the recipient’s take-home salary; confirm host employment and budget arrangements

Do not carry an earlier round’s salary contribution into a future budget. Check the relevant grant guidelines, indexation and host arrangements.

Early-Career Eligibility and Career Interruptions

ARC’s factsheet describes an eligibility window of up to five years of research experience since the PhD or equivalent, assessed against the grant opportunity’s eligibility dates. Allowable career interruptions can extend this period.

Examples in the factsheet include caring responsibilities, parental leave, disability or medical conditions, international relocation, unemployment, non-research work and limited access to facilities. These are not automatic exemptions: ask the host research office to calculate and document eligibility under the relevant guidelines.

Round-specific assessment required: do not assess eligibility from graduation year alone. Check the precise PhD award-date rule, eligible interruptions, nomination limits and other conditions for the applicable round.

Australian Host and International Applicant Planning

A prospective applicant should first discuss support with an eligible Australian administering organisation. The University of Melbourne’s official DE27 workflow illustrates institutional involvement: host consultation, approved support letter, eligibility review, RMS preparation and research-office submission.

That institution’s internal procedures and deadlines are not universal ARC requirements. Follow your chosen host’s process.

For an applicant based in India or elsewhere overseas, establish host willingness and ask its research office to confirm nationality, residence, employment and project eligibility under current guidelines. This review could not read the GrantConnect opportunity directly because access returned a 403 error; it therefore does not assert blanket international eligibility.

Assessment and Proposal Strategy

The University of Melbourne DECRA guide reports the following DE27 assessment weights:

Investigator / capability35%
Project quality and innovation35%
Benefit15%
Feasibility15%

Recheck the next round’s guidelines before using these weights. As editorial preparation, link your achievements to the proposed methods, explain the knowledge gap, identify benefits and show why the host and budget make the work feasible.

Materials to Prepare

This is a planning checklist, not a substitute for the round’s Instructions to Applicants.

  • Accurate academic CV and research-output record.
  • PhD award evidence and documented career interruptions where relevant.
  • Project question, objectives, methods and timetable.
  • Evidence of researcher capability relative to opportunity.
  • Budget justification linked to the work plan.
  • Host support, facilities and mentoring arrangements.
  • Statements and institutional certifications required by the applicable form.

Application Workflow for a Future Round

  1. Verify that a new ARC round has been announced.
  2. Secure host support and confirm the internal timetable.
  3. Ask the research office to check eligibility and nomination limits.
  4. Read the grant guidelines and Instructions to Applicants.
  5. Prepare the RMS profile, proposal and budget.
  6. Complete host review and required approvals.
  7. Submit through the administering organisation’s process.
  8. Retain confirmation of final institutional submission.

Do not treat an applicant’s draft or submission to a research office as confirmation that ARC has received the final application.

CareerAidHub Applicant Guidance

The following is editorial guidance, not an extra ARC requirement.

Choose a host for project fit

Check facilities, data access, mentoring and institutional commitment. A prestigious name cannot replace the resources needed to execute the project.

Make the proposal coherent

Each objective should connect to a method, deliverable and justified cost. Explain technical risks and alternatives without promising outcomes that cannot be guaranteed.
