Funding and key dates

Eligibility and research scope

Applicants must be new to UVic: current/former UVic postdocs and UVic PhD graduates normally need exceptional-circumstances consideration. Complete all PhD requirements before starting and normally within two years before the deadline.

Any research area is eligible; Aspiration 2030 Impact Area alignment is not scored. EDI contributions are required. A BC biodiversity conservation fellowship is included, favouring climate-change-related research. Fellows must reside in Victoria.

Documents and submission

Submit one combined PDF online: cover sheet, candidate statement (1 page), supervisor statement (1 page), proposal (2 pages plus up to 4 reference pages), CV and applicable special circumstances (1 page).

Two independent referees must email letters directly to postdocadmin@uvic.ca before closing. Use the official call for forms, formatting and complete conditions.

Confirm the supervisory commitment

Discuss research fit, available facilities and the practical funding arrangement early. Ask how your work would connect to the group’s expertise and where you would develop independent skills.

Agree on who will prepare each component and when you will review the complete package. A shared checklist can help prevent inconsistencies between the project and supporting statements.

Explain your development

Use concrete examples to show how your previous work prepares you for the project. Identify the training you still need and explain how this research environment could provide it.

Describe EDI contributions with specific actions and context. Avoid generic promises that are unrelated to your research practice or discipline.

Make the research plan assessable

State the question, the gap in existing knowledge and the rationale for your approach. Explain the sequence of work and the resources each stage needs.

Distinguish intended outcomes from assured results. Include realistic alternatives for important methodological risks. Where community relationships are relevant, describe your role and permissions accurately.

Check the final package

1. Confirm eligibility and any need for exception review.
2. Reconcile dates, project title and supervisor details across documents.
3. Check every page limit against the official instructions.
4. Give referees the correct delivery address and closing time.
5. Preview the combined PDF and retain your submitted version.

Do not assume that research expenses, travel or other additional support are covered unless confirmed in the applicable terms. Discuss project costs with the supervisor before committing to the plan.
