Stanford PRISM 2026 at a Glance

The Stanford Postdoctoral Recruitment Initiative in Sciences and Medicine, known as PRISM, is administered by Stanford’s Office of Postdoctoral Affairs.

PRISM is designed to help advanced graduate students explore Stanford as a potential postdoctoral training environment, identify prospective faculty mentors and complete substantive postdoctoral interviews.

Who Is Eligible for Stanford PRISM?

Graduate-stage requirement

PRISM primarily targets advanced graduate students preparing for postdoctoral training rather than researchers already established in postdoctoral positions.

For the Fall 2026 cohort, Stanford says applicants should generally intend to complete their PhD within the period relevant to the December 2026 visit, with December 2026–August 2027 listed as the target graduation window. Later graduation dates may sometimes be considered at the discretion of faculty or the programme.

Travel origin

Applicants must generally be travelling from within the United States or its territories.

Applicants in Canada, Mexico and certain nearby locations may also be considered when travel funding is available.

Citizenship Rules Depend on the Stanford School

Stanford School of Medicine

Applicants seeking School of Medicine faculty mentors must be eligible for NIH T32 training support by the time a Stanford postdoctoral appointment would begin.

This generally means U.S. citizenship or permanent residency. Stanford also explicitly welcomes Dreamers and DACA recipients to apply.

Engineering, Humanities & Sciences and Doerr School of Sustainability

Applicants may be of any citizenship, provided appropriate U.S. visa status can be obtained for a subsequent Stanford postdoctoral appointment.

Selecting Potential Stanford Faculty Mentors

Applicants identify between two and six Stanford faculty members they would be interested in meeting as potential postdoctoral mentors.

Applicants are not restricted to faculty who have formally opted into PRISM, although Stanford provides a searchable mentor list to help candidates identify interested faculty.

Contact faculty before applying

Stanford recommends contacting potential mentors before submission, ideally within one month of the PRISM deadline.

A concise email should introduce your current research, graduate institution and adviser, explain your scientific interest in the faculty member’s work, and mention that you are applying through Stanford PRISM.

Faculty do not need to reply before you list them in your application.

Fall 2026 Application Requirements

Two-page research statement

The research statement should provide an overview of your scientific background and current project and explain how that work connects to the research directions you want to explore as a postdoctoral scholar.

Faculty-specific alignment statements

Each selected faculty member receives an individual statement explaining the scientific connection between the applicant and that mentor.

How PRISM Selection Works

After the application closes, Stanford first checks eligibility and then forwards qualifying applications to the faculty selected by the applicant.

Faculty may conduct short Zoom screening interviews with promising candidates.

Faculty then nominate candidates they would like to interview through the on-campus PRISM programme.

Stanford uses these nominations to build the final PRISM cohort and expects to notify applicants by 9 November 2026.

December 2026 Stanford Interview Visit

The Fall 2026 on-site interviews are currently scheduled for 7–10 December 2026.

Stanford describes PRISM visits as approximately three to five days depending on interview scheduling.

During the visit, invited recruits may:

• interview with Stanford faculty;
• visit research groups and laboratories;
• give a research talk;
• meet Stanford postdoctoral scholars;
• learn about postdoctoral training and campus resources; and
• receive professional-development and interview coaching.

Stanford’s Office of Postdoctoral Affairs manages eligible PRISM travel logistics and costs for invited recruits.

Does Stanford PRISM Pay a Postdoctoral Salary?

No. PRISM itself is an interview travel and recruitment programme rather than a salaried postdoctoral fellowship.

If a faculty member later makes a Stanford postdoctoral offer, that appointment must satisfy Stanford’s normal postdoctoral funding requirements.

For FY2027, Stanford’s published minimum annual funding level begins at $79,056 for a newly appointed postdoc with zero months of prior research experience and rises with experience.

PRISM Baker Fellowship: Possible Follow-On Funding

Candidates who participate in PRISM and later receive a Stanford postdoctoral offer may potentially benefit from the separate PRISM Baker Fellowship.

The Baker pilot provides matching support equal to 50% of Stanford’s postdoc minimum salary for the first 12 months, plus associated fringe.

The faculty mentor, rather than the candidate alone, applies after an offer or offer contingent upon funding has been made.

Baker funding is competitive, limited and subject to availability. It should not be described as an automatic PRISM benefit.

How to Apply for Stanford PRISM Fall 2026

1. Confirm that your PhD timeline fits the current PRISM recruitment window.
2. Check the travel-origin requirements.
3. Determine which Stanford School contains the faculty you want to approach and check the corresponding citizenship rules.
4. Research potential Stanford mentors thoroughly.
5. Select two to six potential faculty mentors.
6. Contact those faculty where practical before submission.
7. Prepare your maximum two-page research statement.
8. Write an individualized research-alignment statement for every selected faculty member.
9. Prepare the candidate statement and postdoctoral research-direction section.
10. Upload your CV.
11. Request the mandatory recommendation from your current research adviser and any optional supplemental references.
12. Submit the PRISM application by 2 October 2026 at 9:00 a.m. PDT.

Treat PRISM as a postdoctoral interview process

The strongest applicants should approach PRISM the way they would approach a serious faculty-level recruitment interaction rather than a generic travel programme.

Invest heavily in mentor selection

Faculty review is central to selection. Choosing six weakly aligned names is less useful than identifying a smaller set of mentors with genuine scientific overlap.

Make every 350-word faculty statement specific

Explain the scientific question, method or conceptual connection between your work and each faculty member’s research, and state what new expertise you would develop in that group.

Do not assume PRISM equals a funded postdoc

PRISM funds and facilitates recruitment interviews. Postdoctoral salary, appointment duration and research funding are negotiated only if a faculty member subsequently offers a Stanford appointment.
