Canada Global Impact+ Research Talent Initiative: Funding Streams and Current Status
Understand the difference between federal nomination rounds, institutional recruitment and individual appointment terms before planning an application.
Current status: read the deadline in context
Canada launched the umbrella initiative in December 2025, announcing up to CAD 1.7 billion over 12 years. It combines four distinct streams.
The chair component is now named the Eddie Goldenberg Research Chairs of Canada. On 27 August 2026, the government announced Intake 1 support for 64 chairs and recruitment of 63 Emerging Leaders. These are announced allocations, not a count of currently vacant jobs.

The four funding streams

Chair and Emerging Leader grant amounts are research funding, not guaranteed personal compensation. Read the employment offer and funding conditions separately.
Eligibility and application routes
Research chairs and Emerging Leaders
Eligible Canadian institutions submit chair nominations. Chair candidates must work and reside outside Canada at the intake deadline and meet the professor or associate-professor standard, or equivalent qualifications outside academia.
Emerging Leaders recruitment follows chair acceptance. Candidates must work and reside abroad when that acceptance occurs. Confirm the institution’s vacancy and career-stage requirements directly.
Doctoral and postdoctoral training
Training awards use institutional nomination. Candidates must be studying or working abroad without a current Canadian institutional affiliation and meet the relevant doctoral enrolment or postdoctoral appointment requirements.
The official Q&A permits a new nominee before 31 December 2026 if a second-wave nominee declines. This is a conditional replacement mechanism, not a reopened competition. Awards must activate by 31 March 2027.
Normal visa processes apply. The training Q&A states that additional travel funding is not provided.
Research priorities
The training-award guidance lists advanced digital technologies; health and biotechnology; clean technology and resource value chains; environment, climate resilience and the Arctic; food and water security; democratic and community resilience; manufacturing and advanced materials; and defence and dual-use technologies.
Identify the relevant priority accurately. A project should have a substantive connection rather than simply repeat the priority’s wording.
How to assess an institutional opportunity

- Identify the stream. Establish whether the notice concerns a chair, faculty recruitment or a training nomination.
- Verify that the route is live. Obtain the institution’s closing date, contact and submission instructions.
- Confirm eligibility. Explain your current location, employment and affiliations accurately.
- Check the research match. Read the host’s work and identify the resources and expertise your project needs.
- Clarify the offer. Ask about compensation, research budget, benefits, appointment length and relocation arrangements.
Prepare evidence of contribution
Use a focused CV and selected examples to explain your role in publications, funded work, methods, software, partnerships and researcher development. Distinguish your individual contribution from the wider team’s output.
A research vision should connect the question, approach, resources and intended users. Explain how the work could produce useful evidence, technology or practice, while acknowledging uncertainty in future results.
Questions for the host
- Is there an authorised nomination or funded vacancy available?
- What internal approvals and documents are required?
- Which costs are covered by the award, and which need other support?
- What appointment and start-date conditions apply?
Keep written confirmation of important terms. Avoid committing to relocation costs based solely on a general funding announcement.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a single application form for the whole initiative?
No. Choose the stream first, then follow the eligible institution’s recruitment or nomination procedure.
Is the initiative the same as an open scholarship competition?
No. The published federal submission rounds have passed. A live institutional vacancy must be checked on its own terms.
Can the chair grant be treated as personal salary?
No. It supports an institutional research programme and associated eligible costs. Salary and employment terms are negotiated with the host.
Can a returning Canadian receive a training award?
Potentially. The training rules allow any citizenship, but require current study or work abroad and no current Canadian institutional affiliation, along with the remaining criteria.
Is December 31 a new general training-award deadline?
No. It concerns replacement of a declined second-wave nominee. Ask the institution whether that specific situation applies.
Does the award guarantee a visa?
No. Normal immigration processes still apply. Funding approval does not itself grant entry or work authorisation.
What evidence should I prepare for a host discussion?
Bring a focused CV, selected research contributions, a feasible future programme and evidence of relevant partnerships or training experience.
